![]() ![]() I have zero skill and could do nothing with it, but the number of maps in the server browser was staggering. A central pillar of this was having the best map editor possible from the start, and they have delivered on that promise. This is aided by a fantastic level editor and custom map browser.Ī core principle during the creation of the game was actively engaging the community. There is a lot to uncover in this game, and even though it’s listed as early access it already has more content than most games of the genre. You find these Runes in specific levels which have a very obvious giant rune hovering over them on the select screen. ![]() The level select map has multiple paths you can take, though some are gated by Runes. There are a lot of weapons in this game, and finding them is gated through a simplistic progression system. It is unbelievably satisfying, and I love it to death. After a decently long charge-up period you get an incredibly powerful and accurate slug round that sets whatever it hits on fire. The main shot is a heavy and accurate spread, but the charged shot is something of pure murderous beauty. Without a good shotgun these types of games simply cannot work, and Prodeus has one of the best I can remember. Things start slow with just a pistol that can single or burst fire, quickly you’ll unlock what is the most important thing in a game like this, the shotgun. Your goal is to kill him no matter the cost, and you’ll have a bevy of weapons at your disposal to do so. Prodeus being the in-game character who created the world and everyone in it. Gameplay-wise you control a “corrupted agent of Prodeus”. None of which would matter if the rest of the package didn’t hold up, but thankfully it does. It leads to something unique and incredible looking. When an enemy is killed they turn into a sprite on the fly and if you walk around them they rotate like they would in the classics. The game uses a modern engine but it applies shaders to the models to simulate the much lower resolution look of 90’s PC games but with access to modern touches such as dynamic lighting and fantastic-looking particle effects. It hit Game Pass in June of 2021 and immediately caught our eyes due to its incredible graphical style. Prodeus takes place in a world of the same name, with the player taking up the role of a corruption within this world that just seeks to destroy its creator and all those poor souls that get in the way.Kickstart My Heart (Which is full of murder)īack in April of 2019, the game ran a very successful Kickstarter campaign, and the first early-access version was released in November of the following year. ![]() Protagonists in boomer shooters don’t need to pontificate as to what or why they’re in the situation they are, they just need pointing to the direction of the nearest antagonist. So as expected, there isn’t really a sweeping narrative to distract you from what needs to be done. The games games campaign does offer more than a simple linear route, with the shards collected during stages occasionally opening new areas in previous sections or alternate paths that can offer new challenges to play. The main addition to longevity would be the level editor. This allows the community to build & share levels with other users, requires a sign up to access levels from others, which will no doubt offer some hand picked by the developers too. It’s not an easy toolset to get to grips with, but is complex enough to allow to allow for stages as good as the main game. ![]() Only real omission would be multiplayer, tho I never once felt like it’s needed really, but something like a coop survival mode would be nuts on a shooter like this. This game goes the route of an old school shooter visually, to match up with the rest of the package, yet manages to pack in enough modern techniques that it doesn’t look out of place at all. The stages are 3D with some retro inspired texture work, with the enemies and special effects generally 2D based. Sounds 90’s enough, but what really gives it a modern edge is the lighting. The way it casts through hilariously low res smoke or reflects to your gun and onto enemies gives the game a modern sheen, also creates some nice ambience in the quieter sections. It is up to you tho, there are options to tweak the look of the game if you want less, or even more, of a retro look. Once the shooting starts the game goes OTT visually, with a ridiculous amount of gore & effects. You really can paint a room red as enemies are ripped to shreds by gunfire, blood will even drip from the ceiling if you manage to get some up there. This action complimented by a rocking soundtrack that kicks in at the right time before shuffling away once all your enemies are vanquished. Thankfully performance seems good so far. ![]()
